Introduction
Rats and mice are more than just an annoyance—they can carry diseases, damage property, and contaminate food. If you're looking for a safe, eco-friendly way to deter these unwelcome guests, skip the harsh chemicals and try a natural remedy instead. This homemade rodent repellent is easy to prepare, non-toxic to humans and pets, and surprisingly effective at keeping rodents away from your living spaces. Made with strong-smelling herbs and essential oils, it works by targeting the rodents’ keen sense of smell.
Ingredients
2 cups water
10 drops peppermint essential oil
5 drops eucalyptus essential oil (optional)
1 tablespoon white vinegar
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (ground)
1 clove garlic, minced
Small cloth sachets or cotton balls
Spray bottle (for alternate application)
Directions
Prepare the Base Mixture: In a small saucepan, combine water, minced garlic, vinegar, and cayenne pepper. Simmer gently for 5–10 minutes to infuse the mixture.
Strain and Cool: Let the mixture cool slightly, then strain it to remove solids.
Add Essential Oils: Once the liquid is at room temperature, add the peppermint and eucalyptus oils. Stir well.
Apply:
For sachets: Soak cotton balls in the solution and place them inside sachets.
For spray: Pour the solution into a spray bottle and shake before use.
Deploy: Place the sachets or spray around entry points, under sinks, in cabinets, basements, or any areas where rodent activity is suspected.
Serving and Storage Tips
Store any unused solution in a tightly sealed container in a cool, dark place for up to 2 weeks.
Refresh the cotton balls or reapply the spray every 4–7 days, or after heavy cleaning or rain.
Be sure to label the bottle and keep it out of reach of small children.
