Introduction
When the seasons change or colds strike, a persistent cough can be both exhausting and irritating. Instead of reaching for store-bought syrups filled with artificial flavors and preservatives, why not turn to nature’s pharmacy? Ginger and thyme are two powerful ingredients with centuries of healing tradition behind them. This homemade cough syrup harnesses their natural potency to ease throat irritation, suppress coughing, and support respiratory health.
Ingredients
1 tablespoon fresh ginger root, grated or finely chopped
1 tablespoon dried thyme (or 2 tablespoons fresh thyme)
1 cup water
1/2 cup raw honey (local if possible)
Juice of 1 lemon (optional for extra vitamin C boost)
Directions
In a small saucepan, combine the water, ginger, and thyme.
Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over low heat. Allow it to simmer for about 10–15 minutes to extract the medicinal properties.
Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
Strain the liquid through a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a clean bowl.
Once the liquid is warm (not hot), stir in the raw honey until fully dissolved.
If using lemon juice, stir it in now.
Pour the syrup into a sterilized glass jar or bottle and seal tightly.
Serving and Storage Tips
Dosage: Take 1–2 teaspoons every 3 to 4 hours as needed for relief.
Storage: Keep the syrup refrigerated. It should stay fresh for up to 2 weeks. Shake well before each use, as natural separation may occur.
