Salt in the closet, why?
Salt is known to be a natural absorbent and can combat humidity as a dehumidifier. The latter is a real nuisance that appears on walls, in the washing machine or even in wardrobes. Additionally, salt helps absorb moisture because it is an ionic compound and has the ability to attract water molecules in the air.
How do you use salt to reduce humidity in closet?
To take advantage of salt’s moisture-removing properties, salt or rock salt is your ally in combating mold and the resulting odors. To do this, fill pots or cups with coarse salt, make holes in the lid and place them in the cupboards. Because salt is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs water from the air, it prevents your clothes from being damaged by moisture. The same goes for everything in your closet. You can also use this trick to scent your wardrobe by adding a few drops of your favorite essential oil to the salt.
You can make a homemade dehumidifier using coarse salt
To do this you need the following ingredients:
- A plastic bottle
- Salt or coarse salt
- A piece of cotton
- A cutter
- A piece of gauze
- An elastic band
Start by cutting the bottle a third of the way down the neck using a knife or cutter. Place the cotton at the bottom of the bottle. Then place the piece of gauze around your neck and secure it with a rubber band. Then place the neck upside down on the bottom of the bottle and fill the top of the bottle with salt or rock salt. The latter attracts water and eliminates uncomfortable humidity. You can put this bottle in your wardrobe and say goodbye to musty smells and stains on your clothes. You can also place this bottle in a bedroom or other damp area of the house.
