Introduction
Often overshadowed by more mainstream superfoods, Physalis angulata—commonly known as ground cherry, wild gooseberry, or husk tomato—is a small fruit packed with mighty benefits. With its papery husk and vibrant orange hue, this fruit isn’t just a visual delight; it’s a nutritional powerhouse. Native to tropical and subtropical regions, it has long been valued in traditional medicine for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immune-supporting properties. Today, we’re sharing how to prepare this fruit in a simple, delicious recipe that amplifies its natural wellness potential.
Ingredients: (For a 2-serving Physalis Angulata Wellness Jam)
2 cups fresh Physalis angulata (husks removed and washed)
¼ cup raw honey or maple syrup (optional for sweetness)
1 tablespoon chia seeds (for natural thickening and fiber boost)
1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice (for balance and preservation)
¼ cup water
Directions:
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the cleaned Physalis fruits and water.
Simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the berries burst and soften.
Use a fork or potato masher to gently mash the fruit into a pulp.
Add the honey/maple syrup, lemon juice, and chia seeds. Stir to combine.
Let the mixture simmer for another 5 minutes, then remove from heat.
Allow the jam to cool slightly. It will thicken as it cools due to the chia seeds.
Transfer to a clean glass jar and refrigerate.
Serving and Storage Tips:
Enjoy this jam on toast, stirred into yogurt, or as a topping for oatmeal or pancakes.
Store in an airtight glass container in the refrigerator for up to 10 days.
For longer preservation, consider freezing in small portions or using proper canning methods.
