Introduction
In the battle for a thriving garden, nature often provides the best tools. Garlic, long hailed for its culinary and medicinal powers, is also a secret weapon against unwanted garden pests. Acting as a natural insect repellent, garlic spray is a safe, eco-friendly alternative to harsh chemical pesticides. This homemade garlic pest repellent is simple to make and surprisingly effective, protecting plants while keeping your garden chemical-free. Here’s how to harness the power of garlic to guard your greenery.
Ingredients:
2 full bulbs of garlic (approximately 20 cloves)
1 liter (4 cups) of water
1 tablespoon of mild liquid dish soap (preferably biodegradable)
Optional: 1 small hot chili pepper (for added potency)
Spray bottle or garden sprayer
Directions:
Peel and crush the garlic cloves. If using chili, chop it roughly.
Blend the garlic (and chili, if using) with 2 cups of water until you get a thick, pungent mixture.
Strain the mixture through cheesecloth or a fine sieve into a large bowl to remove solids.
Dilute the strained liquid with the remaining 2 cups of water.
Add the dish soap and stir gently—this helps the spray stick to plant leaves.
Pour the finished mixture into a spray bottle or garden sprayer.
Serving and Storage Tips:
Application: Spray directly onto the leaves (top and underside) and stems of plants, ideally in the early morning or late evening to avoid burning foliage in direct sunlight.
Frequency: Reapply every 5–7 days or after rainfall.
Storage: Store unused spray in the refrigerator for up to one week. Label clearly to avoid accidental culinary use!
