Introduction:
Pest problems are a common nuisance, especially in warmer months. While chemical sprays can be effective, they often come with health and environmental risks. Fortunately, there's a safer, affordable, and highly effective alternative: a natural pest control solution made from baking soda and vinegar. This dynamic duo not only fizzes away grime in cleaning routines but also works to deter many common household pests, including ants, cockroaches, and fruit flies. Let's explore how you can make and use this non-toxic pest repellent right in your own home.
Ingredients:
1/2 cup baking soda
1/2 cup white distilled vinegar
1 cup warm water
10 drops of essential oil (optional — peppermint, eucalyptus, or tea tree oil are known pest deterrents)
Spray bottle
Small dish or jar (if using as a trap)
Directions:
For General Spraying:
In a large measuring cup or bowl, combine the warm water and baking soda. Stir until fully dissolved.
Slowly add the vinegar. The mixture will fizz — this is normal and helps boost cleaning and pest-fighting power.
Once fizzing subsides, add your essential oil (if using).
Pour the solution into a clean spray bottle.
Spray along baseboards, kitchen counters, garbage cans, windowsills, and other areas where pests are commonly seen.
For a Simple Pest Trap (especially fruit flies):
Place 1 tablespoon of baking soda in a small dish or jar.
Add 1/4 cup vinegar and a drop of essential oil.
Set the dish in areas where pests gather — they’ll be drawn in and deterred or trapped by the reaction.
Serving and Storage Tips:
Storage: Store the unused spray in a cool, dry place for up to one week. Shake gently before each use.
Application Frequency: Spray daily for active infestations or every 2–3 days for maintenance.
Caution: Avoid spraying directly on pets or food. Always label your spray bottle clearly.
