Ingredients:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup sugar
1 packet active dry yeast (about 2 1/4 teaspoons)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup milk
1/4 cup unsalted butter
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Optional fillings (cheese, ham, scrambled eggs, or sweet fillings like cinnamon sugar)
Instructions:
Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm milk (about 110°F), sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until the yeast becomes bubbly and foamy.
Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the activated yeast mixture, the egg, vanilla extract, and softened butter. Stir everything together until a dough begins to form.
Knead the Dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it for about 5-7 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic. If it feels too sticky, add a little more flour.
Let the Dough Rise: Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
Shape the Buns: Punch down the dough to release the air. Roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle. If you want savory buns, spread a thin layer of cheese, ham, or scrambled eggs. For sweet buns, sprinkle cinnamon sugar or spread a jam of your choice. Roll the dough tightly into a log, then slice it into 8-10 equal pieces.
Bake: Arrange the rolled buns on a greased baking sheet. Let them rest for another 20 minutes. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the buns for 15-20 minutes or until they turn golden brown on top.
Cool and Serve: Remove the buns from the oven and let them cool slightly before serving. Enjoy them warm or at room temperature.
