Introduction:
Vicks VapoRub has been a household staple for decades, best known for soothing colds and clearing congestion. But did you know it can serve as a base for your own homemade vapor chest rub recipe? With just a few natural ingredients, you can amplify its soothing properties or create your own version from scratch. While it’s not for the kitchen, this recipe is a fun, DIY twist that puts a fresh spin on an old remedy — perfect for cold and allergy season.
Ingredients:
To make your own vapor rub inspired by Vicks (not for eating!), you'll need:
2 tablespoons coconut oil
2 tablespoons shea butter or beeswax pellets
10 drops eucalyptus essential oil
5 drops peppermint essential oil
5 drops tea tree oil
1 teaspoon of Vicks VapoRub (optional, for a stronger menthol boost)
Directions:
In a small saucepan or double boiler, gently melt the coconut oil and shea butter (or beeswax pellets) over low heat.
Once melted, remove from heat and let cool slightly (about 2–3 minutes).
Stir in the essential oils and the optional spoonful of Vicks for a more powerful menthol effect.
Pour the mixture into a small, clean container or tin. Let it set until firm — usually about 30 minutes at room temperature or 10 minutes in the fridge.
Once solidified, your DIY vapor rub is ready to use.
Serving and Storage Tips:
While this rub isn’t for eating, it's perfect for applying to your chest, neck, or even feet before bedtime. Store it in a cool, dry place with the lid tightly sealed. It should last up to 6 months, especially if kept away from direct sunlight.
