Orchids are as stunning as they are delicate, and their care often leads to doubts and mistakes. This article outlines some tricks to keep your orchids blooming beautifully, from watering to placement.
With proper care, orchids can last for years, gracing us with their lovely blooms. Follow these tips carefully for a healthy and flourishing orchid.
Suitable Pot
Although often sold in transparent containers, not all orchids are suited for this type of pot. Ground orchids, for example, thrive well in ceramic pots or other opaque materials. It’s the climbing orchids that need light at their roots, among which the famous Phalaenopsis is found.
However, any orchid will start growing roots out of the pot if it doesn’t get the amount of light it needs.
Watering
Orchids need their roots to be consistently moist, but be careful to avoid standing water. Water by spraying the substrate (for ground plants) or by immersing in water for about 2 minutes, no more. Ensure the plant is well-drained to prevent stagnation.
The best way to know when your orchid needs water is to stick your finger in the substrate to check for moisture. Another method is to ensure the roots are apple green in color. If they’re not grayish, it’s time to water.
Bloom
To keep an orchid in continuous bloom, change the substrate once a year, but you can keep the same pot as orchids don’t increase much in size.
As the plant gets watered, the substrate loses nutrients, making it important to replace it. Also, apply a special fertilizer and remember to choose a substrate specifically made for orchids.
